PURPOSE: To provide an integrated planar optical waveguide including one or several pieces of planar optical components or elements such as a lens, a diffraction grating and a microprism for instance. CONSTITUTION: This planar optical waveguide is provided with a base body 1, a waveguide core layer 2 and at least one planar optical element and the planar optical element is provided with at least one optically functioning boundary surface 3 adjacent to a void 4 and an over clad layer 5. Since the difference of a refractive index is practically large compared with the refractive index of the waveguide core layer for the void, an action for improving the optical performance of the planar optical element is performed. Also, a method for manufacturing such a planar optical waveguide is presented. |
