Process for coating substrate with optical interference coating - using auxiliary substrate and solvent immersion

Substrate, e.g. end face of an optical fibre, is coated with an optical interference coating system by transfer of the system from an auxiliary substrate. The auxiliary substrate is coated with a soluble coating before application of the system and then is immersed in a solvent, so that the coating is removed. A side of the substrate is then brought against the floating coating system to form a band and is removed and dried. ADVANTAGE - Avoids use of adhesive, does not affect coating characteristics.
