The method concerns manufacture of the cylinder block of a multicylinder internal combustion engine in which the cylinders are produced as a unit (1) which subsequently is surrounded with a casting housing (6). The method is characterised by the fact that the cylinder unit (1) is produced by a continuous pressing or casting process. The resultant cylinder block is characterised by at least one of the following features: (a) the cylinder unit (1) is made of a light (possibly fibre-reinforced) metal, and is possibly coated; (b) the housing (6) is pressure cast in a light (possibly fibre-reinforced) metal; (c) the cylinder block has a closed-deck structure; (d) the housing is provided with a groove (7) for accommodation of an appropriate sealant (8). A water jacket core (3) is attached to the cylinder unit (1) before the housing (6) is cast around it. Such a core is provided with a coating. USE/ADVANTAGE - In manufacture of multicylinder internal combustion engines. The manufacturing process is simplified in comparison with known methods.
