The applicator, to coat paper or cardboard webs, has a guide surface at the carrier beam (24) with an angled sharp edge at the outlet end of the guide surface (10). The guide surface (10) steadily narrows towards the mantle surface of the counter roller (1), towards the outlet edge, with an angle from 0 deg. to a max. of 10 deg., to form the application gap with a hydrodynamic pressure. The jet (2) delivers to the coating mass with a smooth tangential flow at the start of the guide surface (10) into the gap between it and the web, at the web entry side. USE/ADVANTAGE - The appts. is for coating a paper or cardboard web, with a counter roller to guide the web at the application zone, together with a jet to deliver the coating mass linked to or integrated with a carrier beam.
