摘要 PURPOSE:To provide the single mode optical waveguide constituted by using an optically nonlinear high-molecular material which has high efficiency and a high refractive index as a core part and a high-molecular material which is sufficiently dissolved in generally used solvents and does not require a heat treatment of a high-temp. after film formation as a clad part. CONSTITUTION:This optical waveguide has the core part consisting of the optical nonlinear high-molecular material and the clad part consisting of the high-molecular material contg. bromine. The example of the bromine-contg. high-molecular substance includes a polymer or copolymer of bromophenyl (meth)acrylate having 2 or more pieces of the bromine in a benzene ring. As a result, an optical gate element and directional coupling element greatly improved in element characteristics are extremely easily obtd. Further, the clad materials suitable for the waveguide cores of high refractive indices are widely provided regardless of org. and inorg. systems.
