The scrap material, comprising collected nickel-cadmium or nickel hydride cells, after preliminary comminution (1), is subjected to a grinding secondary comminution (2) and then screened (3). The coarse screen fraction (G) is separated by air classification (4) into a light fraction (L) and a heavy fraction (H), and the latter (H) is separated (5) magnetically. Light fraction (L) and non-magnetic portion (HN) are dried (6) and screened (7) in order to free non-metallic constituents (P, PPW) from predominantly metallic fine portions (S) and to be able to discharge this as harmless waste. The magnetic portion (HM) is mechanically scoured (8) and possibly washed (9), as a result of which a smeltable Ni-Fe mixture is obtained. The fine screen fraction (F) and the fine portions (S) arising in the processing of the coarse fraction (G) are dissolved (20) in dilute acid (HCl). After filtration (21) of the acid, at least metallic nickel and possibly cadmium or metal hydride are selectively extracted from the purified solution (22). The acid can be recycled after purification of scrap electrolyte (KOH). <IMAGE> |
