PURPOSE:To produce a alcohol by reducing a carboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid ester. CONSTITUTION:A carboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid ester is reduced into the corresponding alcohol with an alcohol as a hydrogen source in the presence of the composite oxide of zirconium and niobium as a catalyst. The carboxylic acid or the carboxylic acid ester can be reduced into the corresponding alcohol in the presence of the alcohol in high yield. Particularly, a carboxylic acid having many carbon atoms or its ester having given the corresponding alcohol in a low yield by the single use of the zirconium can more effectively be reduced into the alcohol. |
