The invention provides a method for stunning animals prior to slaughter. According to this method, the animals are exposed to an at least partial vacuum. According to an advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, the animals are exposed to the at least partial vacuum until they have lost consciousness, after which they are guided into a lethal gas atmosphere. A device for carrying out the method according to the invention is provided with a closable room which accommodates the animals and a vacuum source which can be connected to this room. There may also be means for feeding a gas which is lethal to the animals to the room.
