<p>Enhancing vegetative growth in a plant is claimed comprising: (a) identifying and isolating a gene specifically expressed in the prod., maintenance and/or growth of a non-essential plant structure, (b) modifying the isolated gene, (c) transforming plant cells with the modified gene such that expression of the non-essential structure is incomplete or absent in successful transformants and (d) selecting and vegetatively propagating the successful transformants. Also claimed is a modified plant in which a gene specific for a translation prod. essential for the prodn., growth or maintenance of a non-essential structure has been modified whereby the non-essential structure is poorly produced or absent. Also claimed is a modified plant in which the plant is provided with a gene expressing lethally under the control of a gene promotor specific to a non-essential structure whereby the non-essential structure is poorly produced or absent.</p> |
