The machine includes a toothed wheel (13) which is rotatably driven around the periphery of the lid (C) of the container (B) by a drive mechanism (2). A further mechanism presses the wheel downwardly such that it causes the edge of the lid to bear against the inner side wall of the container. The wheel is inclined slightly relative to the plane of the container wall, such that its lower point describes a circle of slightly larger circumference than its upper point. The pressing mechanism consists of a cam which bears against a wheel support member (31) which is slidably mounted on a carrier which may be rotated around the container circumference. ADVANTAGE - Simple opening action, avoiding damage to container to allow reclosure.
