The scanner (110) has a linear sensor array (122) in an imaging plane (142;II). The array (122) generates data signals which represent the intensity of the light falling on the array (122). The sensor scanning interval has a predetermined length. An imaging device (118) portrays a moving scanning surface (132) on the object (112) with a number of scan lines (136) on the imaging plane (142,II). The imaging device (118) fixes an imaging light path (130) which extends between the scanning surface (132) and the imaging plane (142,II). A colour wheel (116) along the light path (130) has an axis of rotation (AA) perpendicular to the light path (130) with a number of fronts. These are rotatable to intersect the beam (130). Some fronts have filter parts with different spectral cut-offs. These are rotated during different intervals equal to the scanning intervals. ADVANTAGE - Allows use of only single scanning process using only one linear sensing array.
