PRODUCTION OF PREFORMED MATERIAL FOR OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To provide a production method for a preformed material for optical fibers with high dimensional accuracy through accurately controlling its dimension. CONSTITUTION:This production method is made up of the following three processes: (1) both ends of a core material 10 consisting of silica are designed to such a shape 12 as to increase the friction between the core material and cladding material; (2) a porous preformed material is produced by forming a layer 14 consisting of cladding silica powder on the outer periphery of the regions containing the shape 12 (recess or projection) of a supporting material 11 and the core material 10; and (3) the porous preformed material is sintered.
