A gauge for ensuring the correct spacing between a washer 22 and a wheel bearing 20 comprises a housing 30 with a central opening 42, a cam member 44 with inwardly extending lobes 46 which co-operate with gauge fingers 48 urged outwardly by springs 54 but held by the cam member 64 in a position in which the fingers extend into the opening 42, each gauge finger then being positioned between the bearing 20 and the washer 22. The washer 22 is formed with grooves 56 Fig. 4 (not shown) to receive the fingers 48 to allow the latter to be of greater thickness than the desired spacing. When the washer is in position on the spindle 10 and a nut 24 applied the gauge is released by rotating the cam to position the cam lobes 46 out of alignment with the fingers 48. The nut is then reversely rotated to free each of the fingers 48 from frictional contact with the washer to allow them to move outwardly out of the opening 42 so that the gauge can be removed. In a modification Figs. 7, 8, 9 (not shown) the outward movement of the fingers automatically stops the reverse rotation of the screw by a power wrench. |
