COMPOSITION AND METHODS FOR THE GENERATION OF BONE

Compositions and methods utilizing TGF-.beta. and demineralized bone matrix are described that are capable of inducing the formation of useful, non-resorptive bone. Bone formation is stimulated by the synergistic activity of a TGF-.beta. molecule, such as TGF-.beta.1 or TGF-5.beta., with a HCI-treated demineralized bone matrix. Normal, hard non-resorptive bone development is stimulated and can be utilized in the treatment of fractures, skeletal defects, surgical repairs and skeletal reconstructions, such as in maxillofacialreconstructions.
