A process is claimed for the fabrication of a component in a composite material with a non-organic matrix in which a flexible film is at first produced, formed from a staggered mesh of parallel filaments coated with a matrix forming material, these filaments being bound by a temporary rigidified binder. Sheets cut in the flexible film are then wrapped in order to form a pile from which a preform is produced with a thickness and shape between that of the pile and the component to be made.Finally the preform is subjected to a thermomechanical cycle to produce the ultimate component and to degrade the temporary binder. In order to produce the preform, the pile is heated to a temp. at which the temporary binder becomes sticky, it is subjected to a mechanical compacting and/or shaping and is cooled to allow the hardening of the binder whilst maintaining the mechanical action.The temporary binder used in the process is pref. a polystyrene.
