The method is capable of repeatative correction and improvement of detection speed for error position which is an inverse type of alpha being a pole of the primitive polynomial P. A microprocessor stores the residue into ROMs, which is the value divided alpha 0-50 by (α8 + α4 + α3 + α2 + 1). The error position is derived from the stored residue so that the calculation program for the error position is simplified. The CD-ROM driver comprises a microprocessor (1), a drive pickup unit (2), an input processor (3), a RAM (4), a RAM controller, an error correction processor, an output processor (7), an interface (8), and a timing generator (9).
