PURPOSE:To prolong the lifetime of a nickel-hydrogen battery by using for electrolyte an alkaline aqueous solution consisting of potassium hydroxide solely or its mixture with lithium hydroxide, and specifying the specific gravity of this alkaline solution. CONSTITUTION:A nickel-hydrogen battery is formed from nickel oxide to the positive electrode and a hydrogen storage alloy to the negative electrode, and as the electrolyte an alkaline aqueous solution is used which consists of potassium hydroxide solely or its mixture with lithium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. The specific gravity of this alkaline solution is adjusted so as to range from 1.31 to 1.40, which presents a sufficient quantity of hydroxyl ions, achieves enhancement of the charge/discharge efficiency, and permits ions to move quickly. As a result, the cyclic lifetime of the battery can be prolonged. |
