A method of measuring the amount of light reflected by an optical fiber by guiding the light from a source of measurement light to a directional coupler, permitting the output thereof to be incident upon the fiber to be measured, and separating and picking up using said directional coupler the light reflected at the remote end of the optical fiber, wherein the directional coupler is made up of a birefringent crystal to exhibit the function of polarization and separation, part of the optical fiber to be measured is deformed like a loop, stress built up in the fiber due to the deformation thereof causes said optical fiber itself to exhibit birefringence thereby to constitute an optical fiber-type wave plate board, and wherein the angle of polartzation of the reflected light is adjusted, and the light reflected by the optical fiber to be measured is very selectively separated from the light reflected at the incident end of the optical fiber to he measured, and is measured. The invention further deals with a measuring device.

|
