Reticulated structures of rigid polyvinyls are made by (a) causing a uniform reticulation of a plasticized polyvinyl foam body by permeating it with an explosive mixture of a fuel gas and oxygen or oxygen-enriched air, igniting the mixture and if desired repeating this step (a); and (b) repeatedly contacting the reticulated structure with a fluid capable of removing the plasticizer and drying the product. Specified polymers are PVC, PV bromide, PV fluoride and PV acetate. A suitable plasticizer is didecyl phthalate, which may be removed using methylene chloride. An acetylene/oxygen mixture is a suitable explosive gas mixture; other specified fuel gases are methane, ethane, propane, ethylene and dimethyl ether.
