PURPOSE: To obtain a composition capable of inhibiting both or any of development and growth of bacteria which are liable to cause dental plaque formation, from occurring. CONSTITUTION: This composition contains an amount effective in anti-plaque action of an amino sugar represented by the formula A<1> -NRR<1> (wherein: A<1> is sugar which is selected fromβ-D-galactose,β-D-acetylgalactosamine, L- rhamnose andβ-D-fucose and contains a sugar part capable of recognizing the presence of lectin on oral bacteria; N is bonded to an anomeric carbon atom of a reduced terminal part of sugar A<1> ; and each of R and R<1> is H, an aliphatic, aromatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon group), wherein as the amino sugar, a compound such as at least one N-heptylgalactosylamine can be used. This compound is capable of effectively preventing agglutination and deposition of bacteria on based thereby and has excellent antibacterial activity, and also, is useful for preventing plaque formation, plaque-induced diseases, dental calculus formation, dental caries, pyorrhea alveolaris and periodontal diseases from occurring.
