The reciprocating piston machine is designed to run without lubrication with min. wear and min. generation of noise. An inverted cup-shaped piston (1) runs in a vertical cylinder (13) and has compression rings (4) in grooves near the top. The piston is preloaded downwards by a coil spring (11) bearing against a flange at its bottom. An upright cup-shaped member (2) fitting into the bottom of the piston has a spherical bottom surface engaging the outer ring of a ball bearing (12) mounted on a crank. The centre (7) of the spherical bottom surface is coincident with the centre of gravity of the piston assembly.
