A box partitioning unit consisting of two mutually perpendicular sets of slotted cardboard strips slidden together, Fig. 1 (not shown), is assembled in a machine having at least one holder 23 having sets of spring clips 7 to receive the ends of one set of the strips, a rotating arm 31 engaging through a pin-and-slot connection with the holder to drive it round a rectangular guide. The motion of the holder 23 is intermittently arrested as it travels down one side of its guide, so that a pneumatic servo 17, Fig. 2 (not shown), and a feeder 15 can push individual cardboard strips from a stack 21 into the clips 7. The strips are so arranged that their slots are directed away from the holder 23. The motion of the holder 23 is again arrested intermittently as it travels down the next section of its guide, so that another similar servo 17, &c. (not shown) can feed further slotted strips at right angles to the others on to the holder. The second set of slotted strips have their slots directed towards the holder 23. The slots in the sets of strips engage, to make a cell-like unit. Finally, the completed unit is automatically removed from the holder 23, which commences a new cycle. Notched control rails 57, 59 along two edges of the holder 23 coact with switches 63, 69 to effect intermittent rotation of the arm 31 driving the holder 23, and the corresponding energization of the servos 17. As shown, two opposite holders 23, 25 are provided. To adjust the spacing between adjacent pairs of clips 7, &c., and thus assemble partitioning units having different-sized cells, plates 41 on which the spring clips 7 are mounted can be removed from the holders 23, 25 and replaced by others, with corresponding replacement of the control rails 57, 59. |
