PURPOSE:To prevent a wrong position matching by detecting whether positions of a tracking fisual field and a subject to be tracked are matched or not under a recognized blind sector, registering a featur of the subject to be tracked related to the tracking visual field, and executing a tracking based on its feature. CONSTITUTION:A position matching and setting circuit 51 is constituted of a color difference signal memory 52, an initial gate moving circuit 53, a gate position memory 54 and an initial setting circuit 55, and when a registering mode is started, a gate position ''1'' is stored in the memory 54, and also (R-Y) and (B-Y) color difference signals are stored in the memory 52. Subsequently, the circuit 53 moves a position of a picture element with regard to each gate position, a gate position of that time is stored in the memory 54, and also the circuit 55 detects a variation exceeding thresholds ER and EB corresponding to a width of a blind sector and processes it by considering that the picture element has been shifted from a subject. When the picture element has been put exactly in the subject. A color difference signal is registered in a memory 13 and set as a reference value of a movement deciding circuit 14.
