28 A reaction vessel for the refinement of molten metal comprises an inlet chamber which communicates with a holding furnace and is equipped with means for heating the molten metal flowing into the inlet chamber, at least one reaction chamber which communicates with the inlet chamber and has an opening in its roof through which a rotary injection device may be inserted, and a settling chamber which communicates with the reaction chamber and contains a taphole on an exterior wall of the vessel. The reaction vessel is preferably a bay within the holding furnace which is isolated from the hearth of the holding furnace by means of a high thermal conductive wall extending alongside the wall of the furnace, such high thermal conductive wall having a sub-surface metal eye opening communicating with the inlet chamber of the reaction vessel.
