HV switch with arc extinguishing chamber - coupled to arcing region by radial channels inducing turbulence in gas to aid cooling

The h.v. power switching unit has in-line contact elements of conductive metal coupled, in the on state, by a bridging contact (3). The contact elements are hollow with arcing contact elements (4,5) positioned on the centre line. One of these is fixed (4) and the other can be moved and has a lift graphite tip (6). In the switching off operation the bridging contact moves clear and the pin contact (4) separates for the arcing process to take place in the central section (14). Channels (10,12) connect the arcing region with an extinguishing gas region (15) to produce turbulence aiding gas cooling. ADVANTAGE - Extinguishing gas forced back in through channels to produce strongest possible turbulence. Walls of compressed gas chamber protected from radiation from arc.
