A control (42) and method for controlling an AMT system (10) is provided including sensing vehicle start from stop operation, determining a target engine speed value (A) based upon the operator setting of the throttle pedal (THL) or of the sensed engine torque and modulating the fuel supplied to the engine (FC) to cause the engine speed (N) to rapidly equal and then be maintained at said target engine speed value.
