A window assembly comprises an exterior frame 10 of extruded aluminium with a flange 38 for mounting in a building construction, a pane 14 received in the frame 10 against a flange 40, an interior frame 12 of plastics vynyl material received in the frame 10 and a continuous vynyl strip 110 with a flange 114 fitting into a groove 44 of greater dimension in depth than the flange 114 to allow the take up of tolerance differences in the two frames, the strip 110 engaging around the marginal portions of the pane 14 and around the peripheral portion 84 of the inner frame to secure the pane and frame 12 in the frame 10, the contacting surfaces 122, 120 and 84 of the strip and frame 12 being inclined to the plane of the frames and pane to prevent disengagement of the pane 14 and frame 12 from the frame 10 and the strip 110 being removable to permit removal of the pane 14 and frame 12. Beadings 32, 34, 36 are provided on the frame 10 upper and lower members for receiving at butt joints screws &c. passed thereinto from the two vertical stiles of similar box cross section. As shown in this embodiment a sliding sash 142 of similar construction to the fixed frame is mounted for sliding in the inner frame which in its lower member or sill is provided with a vinyl rib track 182, the pane 16 being secured in its frame by removable vinyl continuous strips 112. Both strips 110 and 112 have grooves 130, 132 respectively for the insertion of installing or removing tools.
