Thin magnetic films having anisotropic ferromagnetic properties are produced by applying to a supporting surface nickel and iron by vapour deposition in a direction normal to the surface and simultaneously applying a nonmagnetic metal by vapour deposition in a direction at an angle between 3 degrees and 20 degrees to the normal to the surface. The coating may contain nickel and iron, in a ratio between 90:10 and 70:30, with molybdenum as the non-magnetic metal in amount between 0.1% and 14%, the nickel and iron being evaporated from a crucible and the molybdenum from an electrically heated wire. The coating may be applied to a thickness less than 2000 Angstrom units on a support of glass in a vacuum, the glass being heated to 200-250 DEG C. during deposition. The method can be improved by carrying out the deposition in a magnetic field of 10-100 oersteds whose direction depends on the direction of the stream of molybdenum vapour. |
