A setting lotion for hair comprises an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution containing 0.5 to 5% by weight of a salt of a basic copolymer comprising (a) a basic amide or ester of an a :b -ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid, or (b) a basic vinyl ether together with a non-basic ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the said salt being formed with a weak organic or inorganic acid, the proportions of the monomers being such that, after application to the hair, the said solution is converted into a water-insoluble film when dried at a temperature of from 18 DEG to 60 DEG C. Preferred monomers (a) have the formula where X represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, n and s each is 1 or 2, and R1 and R2 are each alkyl radicals with 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Copolymerization is by conventional means. The examples relate to copolymers of (1) ethyl acrylate, N-tertiary butylamide and N :N-diethyl amino propyl acrylamide; (2) ethyl acrylate and N :N-diethyl aminopropyl acrylamide, (6) ethyl acrylate, N :N - di - n - butyl acrylamido and N :N-diethyl amino propyl acrylamide; (7) n-butyl acrylate and N :N-dimethyl-aminoethyl acrylamide; (8) methylacrylate and N :N - diethylaminopropyl acrylamide; (9) ethyl acrylate, lauryl acrylate, N :N-diethyl acrylamide and N :N-diethyl amino ethyl acrylamide; (11) methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and diethyl amino propyl vinyl ether; (12) ethyl acrylate, N-tertiary butyl acrylamide and N :N-diethyl amino ethyl vinyl ether; (14) ethyl acrylate and di-(N :N-dimethylaminopropyl) - fumaric acid amide.ALSO:A setting lotion for hair comprises an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution containing 0.5 to 5% by wt. of a salt of a basic copolymer comprising (a) a basic amide or ester of air a = b ethylenically unsaturated mono or dicarboxylic acid or (b) a basic vinyl ether together with a non-basic ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the solid salt being formed with a weak organic or inorganic acid, the properties of the monomers being such that, after application to the hair, the solid solution is converted into a water-insoluble film when dried at a temperature of from 18 DEG to 60 DEG C. The lotion is applied to the damp washed hair, the hair is then curled and dried preferably at a temperature of from 30 DEG -50 DEG C.
