The bed 2 of the filter is cleaned as follows: granular filter material leaves through pipe 12, mixes with dirty water in pipe 13, and enters a vertical tube 6; air infected through holes 8 scours the granular material, which enters a container 7 and flows up and over its walls to enter an annular space 10 between container 7 and vertical partition 9; filtered water rising up the bed cleans the granular material in space 10, and dirty water flows out at 11. (The doublebarbed arrows indicate dirty water flow; singlebarbed arrows indicate flow of granular material). As described, the granular material is sand. Radially disposed vertical partition plates 14 divide the top of the bed 2 into sections. |
