Polyphenylene sulphone fibre (1) is mainly composed of structure units of general formula (I) where X is 0, 1 or 2 and the ave. of X represented by X, lies between 1.0 and 2.0 (pref. between 1.4 and 2.0). The mole ratio, SO/SOx should be 0.3 or more. The degree of orientation of the polyphenylene sulphone fibre (1) is pref. 60% or more. The specific surface area of (1) should be 0.4 m2/g or more. (1) is specified to be a porous fibre.
