PURPOSE:To improve the contrast of a display device, a projection type display device and a view finder by providing specifically a light valve layer and a transparent substrate. CONSTITUTION:The device is constituted so as to satisfy a condition of the expression by denoting center thickness extending from the face for coming into contact with air of a transparent plate 53 to a light valve layer 51, a refractive index, and the maximum diameter of an effective display area of the light valve layer 51, as (t), (n), and (d), respectively. In such a state, thickness from a liquid crystal layer 58 to the boundary face 68 for coming into contact with air becomes thick, therefore, in the case a voltage is not applied to the liquid crystal layer 58, a frontscattered light emitted from the liquid crystal layer 58 is reflected by the emitting face 68 of the transparent plate 53 and returned to the liquid crystal layer 58, and luminance of light re-emitted by a backscattered light from the liquid crystal layer 58 becomes smaller than the case when the transparent 53 does not exist. Also, light which is made incident on the side face 66 of the transparent plate 53 is absorbed by a black paint 67 applied to the side face 66, and an undesired light returned to the liquid crystal layer 5 is decreased, therefore, the contrast of a display image on the liquid crystal layer 58 can be improved. |
