The title displaying right upper edge of a frame is detected and a VCR is controlled to record or not according to the detected title. The apparatus includes a title detector (15) for detecting a title in a frame, an A/D converter (16) for converting detected title signal into digital signal, a pulse generator (18) for generating clock pulse, an error detector (19) for detecting the bit variation of the digital title signal for a certain time so that the title is a fixed title, a counter (20) for designating error checking time, and a servo controller (21) for driving a tape to the record start position according to fixed title recognization signal.
