The system has a steering shaft with a pinion in a pinion housing (5). The pinion meshes with a toothed section of a rack (1). The rack is guided in a rack housing (4). Track rods (2) are connected to the rack, and bellows (6) are located around the connection. The rack housing and the pinion housing each consist of two parts, and are concentric. The rack housing is formed by a simple continuous tube, and the pinion housing is formed by a cast part, which surrounds the tube. One or more synthetic elements are provided for bearing of the rack in the rack housing. USE/ADVANTAGE - Mechanical rack-and-pinion steering consists of simplified components, resulting in reduced material, finishing and mfr. costs.
