The invention relates to a method for measuring logging timber for cutting, in which a gauge is fixed to the root end of the timber tree, and the timber tree is measured and cut into logs. The invention furthermore relates to a measuring instrument for application of the method. Current measuring methods do not identify all trees suitable for logging. In the method according to the invention the measurement is begun from the top part of the tree from the point where the diameter of the tree is equal in size to the minimum diameter for timber logs, and is thereafter shifted towards the root end of the logging timber, and a measuring instrument 1 is used for measuring on which the possible lengths T1-T6 of the logs, multiples and combinations thereof P1-P11, S1-S16, K1-K21 have been marked at subdivided intervals and the timber tree is cut to logs of the desired length at the point for each group of markings T, P, S, K. On the measuring instrument according to the invention possible lengths T1-T6 of the timber logs and multiples and combinations thereof P1-P11, S1-S16, K1-K21 have been marked. <IMAGE>
