PURPOSE:To enable selective production of tetraethylbenzene at a low cost. CONSTITUTION:Polyethylbenzene produced as a by-product of an ethylbenzene production process comprising the alkylation of benzene with ethylene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst is distilled to obtain a triethylbenzene fraction composed mainly of triethylbenzene and the triethylbenzene fraction is ethylated in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to obtain tetraethylbenzene. As an alternative method, tetraethylbenzene is produced by ethylating the triethylbenzene fraction with 0.5-1.0mol (based on 1mol of triethylbenzene) of at least one kind of ethylation agent selected from ethylene, ethyl chloride and ethanol in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, distilling the obtained reaction product to recover the objective tetraethylbenzene and returning the unreacted triethylbenzene to the ethylation reaction process. |
