[Also in Divisions B6 and B8] In making rectangular pockets (Fig. 1) having a closed longitudinal edge 2 and at least one closed transverse edge 3, at least one notch 4 cut out in a free longitudinal edge and at least one rounded corner 5, a continuous web of synthetic plastics material 1 is taken from a reel 8, folded longitudinally over a prismatic core 10, past a first punch 14 which punches a notch in one layer only of the folded web and thence to welding head 20 to produce a transverse seam across the folded web, then to a cutting device 21 which cuts across the folded web adjacent to the seam to cut off a pocket and finally to a second punch 22 which produces the rounded corner. The operations are performed successively on succeeding pocket lengths, the web being held stationary for each operation. The web is traversed through the machine by a reciprocating carriage 15 having clamps 15c, 15d which clamp the web against an endless belt 26 during the forwarding motion of the carriage. After forwarding the clamps 15c, 15d are released and the web is held by fixed clamps 18, 18<SP>1</SP> during which the various operations are carried out on the succeeding pocket lengths and the return movement of the carriage 15 takes place. The punches, clamps and welding head are operated by suitable hydraulic jacks and the length of the pockets produced may be adjusted between limits by adjusting the length of the forwarding movement of the carriage, the distance between the fixed clamps and the position of the cutter and the second punch. |
