PURPOSE:To provide the waveguide type matrix optical switch resistant in production error, excellent in extinction ratio, small in size and little in excessive loss. CONSTITUTION:At the optical switch, a first optical waveguide 6 is provided on a base plate, a clad layer is provided on it, second optical waveguide 8 is provided on the plane, two laminated directional couplers 10a and 10b having the equal combination rate are provided while making the respective optical waveguides adjacent so that the optical axes of the first and second optical waveguides can be parallel and the centers of the respective waveguides can be arranged within 50% of a core diameter on the lines perpendicular to the board, the first and second optical waveguides are constituted between the two laminated directional couplers 10a and 10b so as to get effective optical path length difference just for the half wavelength of signal light, either the first or second optical waveguide between the two laminated directional couplers 10a and 10b is provided with an optical path length switching means to switch the effective optical path length difference into the integer multiple wavelength of the signal light, and a crossing part 12 spatially crossing the first and second optical waveguides is provided. |
