In a weld joint between a steel pressure cylinder 20 and a cylinder head 17, wherein the head is provided with a spigot 18 entering the cylinder, and the spigot shoulder 22 and the cylinder end edge surface 24 present spaced outwardly divergent butt-joint faces, the spigot is circumferentially undercut adjacent the shoulder 22 by a well-rounded groove 21, so that weld metal 30, applied in three or more passes 25-27 (Fig. 2), and a resultant zone of fusion 28 having a thick root 31 (Fig. 3) act, when the cylinder is pressurized, in tension at C, in compression at B, and in shear along D, thus enabling the cylinder head to be of relatively low tensile strength metal such as cast or ductile nodular iron. To mutually locate the head and cylinder prior to welding, a stop may be provided within the cylinder, or, as shown, the spigot 18 may have an integral lip 23 which is fused during welding. |
