The prosthesis consists of a femoral shaft (1) with a projection (1a) at one end defining a neck portion to which a hemispherical head (1b) is attached. At the proximal end of the shaft hollow indentations (1d) are defined in the lateral inner surface. The profile shape of the indentation is defined as a function of the radius of curvature of the proximal portion of the shaft, and is e.g. semicircular in configuration. The indentation may be moulded as part of the formation process of the shaft, or machined into the shaft body after formation.
