The electron tube thermionic cathode has an increased effective surface emissive perimeter for a given volume and theoretical emissive perimeter corresp. to the cathode envelope (1), with a number of holes (2) on the cathode surface. The holes replace the minimal emission surface due to the base of the holes with a greater lateral surface. The micro-structure has a raised emissivity, which depends on the number of holes, their dimensions and their positions. The cathode is pref. a filament. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. triode, tetrode. Raises frequency to many gigahertz at raised power level, without increasing either cathode volume or heat generated.
