PURPOSE:To industrially and advantageously obtain the compound which is a precursor of phenolic compounds useful as an intermediate, etc., for medicines and agricultural chemicals by adding a polymerization inhibitor and a dehydrating catalyst to p-tertiary butoxyphenyldimethylcarbinol and refluxing the resultant mixture under reduced pressure. CONSTITUTION:A dehydrating catalyst (preferably oxalic acid, potassium hydrogensulfate, etc.) in an amount of 5X10<-2> (based on the reactional product) and a polymerization inhibitor (e.g. 4-hydroxyamino-2-methyl-2,5-cyclohexadien-1- one) in an amount of 1X10<-3> (based on the reactional product) are added to a compound of formula I and the pressure is reduced to 140-160mmHg. Thereby, the reactional mixture is refluxed to carry out the reaction, preferably at 60-65 deg.C to afford the objective compound. |
