PURPOSE:To improve the effect of viscosity index improvement, viscosity characteristics at low temp., and capability of dispersing sludge of the subject improver by mixing a specific linear acrylamide copolymer with an oily matter. CONSTITUTION:An ethylene-acrylic ester copolymer obtd. by copolymerizing ethylene with an acrylic ester by the high-pressure polymn. process is hydrolyzed and simultaneously thermally degraded to give an ethylene-acrylic ester-acrylic acid copolymer having a desired mol.wt. The resulting copolymer is amidated with an N-dialkylaminoalkylamine to give the objective improver which comprises a linear acrylamide copolymer consisting of 65-99mol% ethylenic structural units of formula I, 1-35mol% acrylamide structural units of formula II (wherein R<2> is 2-8C alkylene; and R<3> and R<4> are each 1-4C alkyl), and, if necessary, 0-20mol% acrylate structural units of formula III (wherein R<1> is 1-18C alkyl) and having a wt.-average mol.wt. of 5,000-200,000. 0.01-20 pts.wt. the improver is mixed with 99.99-80 pts.wt. oily matter. |
