It has been discovered that certain benzoheterocyclic compounds are useful as direct dyes for coloring keratinaceous fibers, eg., human or other hair. The compounds of the invention conform to formula I: wherein: X and Y are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl, C1-6 alkoxyalkyl, and C1-6 aminoalkyl, C1-6 hydroxyalkyl, and C1-6 hydroxyaminoalkyl; and m = 1,2, or 3. These compounds are novel dyes and are produced via chemical reactions such as those discussed above and set out in the examples.
