1,178,326. Dimerization of acrylonitrile. TOYO RAYON K.K. 31 May, 1967 [31 May, 1966], No. 25170/67. Heading C2C. Adiponitrile is obtained by subjecting acrylonitrile and an iron carbonyl compound to irradiation containing a major portion of its energy in wavelengths between 2000 and 7000 Š, before or after addition of at least one hydroxy compound selected from water, alcohols and phenols. The reaction is preferably effected in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen, argon, carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide, and the hydroxy compound may be present in the reaction mixture from the beginning of the reaction or it may be added at a later stage. A polymerization inhibitor and optionally an inert organic solvent may be present and the acrylonitrile is preferably employed in an amount in excess of that of the carbonyl compound. The source of the irradiation employed may be a high, super high or low pressure mercury lamp, a fluorescent lamp, a xenon lamp or sunlight.
