The bottle is sent in a free fall down a vertical guide passage (2) until it reaches a shock absorbing material (5). A pickup chamber (4) is formed in the extension of the passage (2) and is opened after the bottle (1) has landed on the shock absorbing material. The opening is done by rotating a first wall section (6; 13) of the chamber into the area of the chamber to push the bottle out of the area and away from the receiving station (3). A second wall section (7; 14) is simultaneously rotated to the side of the horizontal path of movement of the bottle.
