The ferromagnetic iron oxide power containing cobalt is prepared by dispersing needle-shaped magnetic iron oxide powder, e.g. γ-Fe2O3 or Fe3O4, with dispersant to form slurry, adding an alkali solution, e.g. sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, as a neutralizing agent, adding one of iron chloride, lacticide and acetate, adding 10-90 wt.% cobalt as cobalt salt, e.g. cobalt lacticide, acetate and chloride, in non-oxidizing atmosphere, heating at 90 deg.C or more, adding 90-10 wt.% cobalt salt of the remaining amount in oxidizing atmosphere to bond the iron salt and cobalt salt with the needle-shaped magnetic iron oxide.
