[Also in Division F4] A cylindrical vessel 10 with domed ends 106 is wrapped with layers of composite insulation, each layer comprising a component of low thermal conductivity and a component of high radiation reflectivity by apparatus comprising a frame 15 carrying; (a) drive means (e.g. a motor 14 and shaft 11) to rotate the vessel about its longitudinal axis, (b) a supply of insulation (either rolls 37, 38 each with one component of the insulating layer, or a single roll if the components are integral) to wrap round the cylindrical surface 1 of the vessel, and (c) a supply of insulation (e.g. rolls 17 to 20) carried by an arm 21 rotatable by drive means (e.g. motor 27 and shaft 26) to wrap orbitally around almost all the surface of the vessel 10. The ratio of the rotational speeds of shafts 11 and 26 is predetermined so that each strip 14b of insulation just overlaps the one previously laid. To allow for the build-up in the thickness of insulation the motor 27, arm 21 &c. may be mounted to undergo continuous angular adjustment about an axis normal to both shafts 11 and 26 while wrapping takes place, Fig. 4 (not shown). The tension in the layers being wrapped may be adjustable either by braking discs 40, 41 being loaded by springs 30, 31, 44, 45 whose loads are varied by moving collars 28, 29, 46, 47. |
