<p>PURPOSE:To provide a compact and light-weight pointing device excellent in reliability and durability by detecting the position of an object put on a boundary surface based on the output value of a light quantity detecting means. CONSTITUTION:The pointing device 1 consists of a prism 2 made of a glass or transparent resin material, a light source 3 like a semiconductor laser or a light emitting diode, etc., and a photoelectric conversion element 4 consisting of a quadripartite photodiode, etc., Then, a finger 6 is put on the upper surface of the prism 2 and the light is transmitted at the part with which the finger skin is directly in contact. Therefore, the light quantity is reduced to the conversion element 4. In such conditions, each output of four photodiodes PD1-PD4 undergoes the arithmetic processing so that the position of the finger 6 is detected on the upper surface of the prism 2. Then, the finger 6 is moved on the prism 2 and continuously calculated. Thus, the movement of the finger can be detected on the surface of the prism 2. Therefore, a cursor can be moved on a display in accordance with the movement of the finger 6.</p> |
