A web passing from delivery means to a twodrum web winder travels over an imperforate guide roller (15, Fig. 1) rotated by the movement of the web, being wrapped about the guide roller over an arc of less than 60 degrees, and in order to eliminate the formation of a boundary layer of air between the roller and the web, the roller is provided with a plurality of grooves providing an open area substantially not in excess of 40% of the total roller surface area. The grooves 18 are circumferentially spaced axially-extending grooves or are arranged in herring-bone patterns or alternatively are parallel and extend inwardly at an angle to the roller axis from both ends of the roller to meet at the mid-point. The width of each groove may be 1/64 to ¥ inch.
